- It was just too much for veteran Broadway showman David
- Merrick, a feisty foe of the critics. When he picked up the New
- York Times after the opening of his revival of George and Ira
- Gershwin's musical Oh, Kay!, he found two -- count 'em, two --
- pans, one each by Times writers Frank Rich and Alex Witchel.
- While critic Rich called Oh, Kay! "chintzy," culture reporter
- Witchel tut-tutted Merrick for not allowing an actor to take a
- curtain call. Declared Merrick: "This is war." Aware that Rich
- and Witchel are romantically involved and attended the show
- together, Merrick, 77, took out an ad in the Times showing a
- heart encircling quotes from the duo and exclaiming, "At Last,
- People Are Holding Hands in the Theatre Again!" He later sent
- a letter to the paper complaining of Witchel's giggling and
- whispering during the performance and wondered if she may have
- influenced Rich's review. Broadway is waiting for Act II.
